<h2>What is Acupuncture?</h2>
<p>Acupuncture is a medical practice originating in China. Acupuncture employs small needles to influence the circulation of energy and blood. <p>Sa-am theory utilizes a special category of points known as Shu Points and applies these points according to the Generating and Controlling Sequences of the Five Elements theory. Only four points are chosen. For example, two points are from the primary Channel being treated, and two from the Grandmother channel according to a tonifying (strengthening) and sedating (lessening) technique.</p>
<p>It is the simplest acupuncture technique using 5 points located in the extremities under elbow and knee so, it is safer without harmful treatment damaging internal body organs. </p>

<h2>My &#8217;Fitter by 40 Bucket List&#8217;</h2>

<p>As  I approach my 40th birthday (April 1st, 2011), I have decided to create a &#8216;Bucket List&#8217; for my health.  Now I know most people might decide to go on an extravegant vaccation, buy a new car or possibly an expensive watch to mark this milestone, but that is not my style.  Instead I have decided to give myself the gift of being more Fit. I will be  making sure all of my systems are running as they should while getting in the best shape of my life by 40!</p>
<h2>So, Why Am Sharing This With All of You?</h2>
<p>To tell you the truth, I find all of this a little scary, so I created 2 major purposes.  The first is that I know that my goals become more attainable when I tell someone else, (in this case 1000&#8242;s of someone else&#8217;s).  The second is that I know that many people may be putting off some these  tests and goals because of  fear or procrastination .  If I can share my experiences with my <em>&#8216;Fitter by 40 Bucket List&#8217;</em> with all of you, it just may help more of you to do the same, and even save some of your lives.  (By the way, you don&#8217;t have to be turning 40, to do this.  Committing to be healthier over the next 6-7 months is a gift you can give yourself anytime, so why not now!)</p>
<h2>What Can You Expect Between Now and April 1st?</h2>

<p>1.  First I will <strong>visit to my General Practitioner</strong>, <a title="My Medical Doctor" href="http://maps.google.com/maps/place?rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address&amp;oe=&amp;rlz=1I7ADSA_en&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;q=dr.+gajdos+clifton&amp;fb=1&amp;gl=us&amp;hq=dr.+gajdos&amp;hnear=Clifton,+NJ&amp;cid=991148806799973034" target="_blank">Dr. Gajdos</a>, to set up <em>All </em>of my Medical Screenings (Physical Exam, Colonoscopy, Prostate, Skin, etc.).  I will document all of these  and keep you posted on <em>Everything</em>.</p>
<p>2.  <a title="Nervous System Evaluation Technology" href="http://www.doctordavidmoore.com/2010/01/achieve-wellness-through-tech-nervous-system-scan-wellness-assessment/" target="_blank"><strong>Nervous System Evaluation</strong> </a>to check my nervous system function.  I will Show you the effectivness of Chiropractic care along the way.  I will use The Insight Millenium Subluxation Station (<a title="Chiropractic Leadership Alliance" href="http://www.subluxation.com/" target="_blank">CLA</a>).</p>
<p>3.  <strong>Wellness Assessment</strong> to check the degrees of Lifestyle Stress in my life. I will use before and after assessments to quantify my results and document the process.  We will use the Creating Wellnesss Assessment System (<a title="Creating Wellnesss Alliance" href="http://www.creatingwellness.com/Public/Home/index.cfm" target="_blank">CWAS</a>).</p>
<p>4.  <strong>Design a Meal Program</strong> with attainable goals to be my Fittest by 40.  I will share with you in detail how to do it youself using a simple and free meal logging website called <a title="The Daily Plate " href="http://www.thedailyplate.com/" target="_blank">The Daily Plate</a>.</p>
<p>5.  <strong>Design a Fitness Program</strong> with attainable goals to be my Fittest  by 40.   I will keep you posted throughout my journey and share tips for you to create the same habits in your life. </p>

<p>Have  those summer bar-b-ques have taken a toll on your fitness goals?  Don&#8217;t let those few extra summer pounds<em> roll</em> into the fall and holiday season.  This is a great time to get back <a title="On Track Chiropractic" href="http://www.ontrackchiro.com/" target="_blank">On Track </a>and take control of your health.  I have always enjoyed setting new goals for the holidays.  Holiday season goals help me stay away from packing on unhealthy fat when everyone else is letting themselves go, while rewarding myself on specific holiday cheat days,  like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. </p>

<p>This week I am focusing on a great Women&#8217;s gym in Clifton.  Having known its owner <a title="Laurie Kirwin" href="http://www.instepfitness.com/about_us" target="_blank">Laurie Kirwin </a>for years, I can attest to her commitment to Women&#8217;s fitness, in Clifton.</p>

But there are questions about how bad the oil could be for humans, too.</span></p>
<p>&#8220;You are dealing with a toxic substance, there&#8217;s no doubt about it,&#8221; said David Mica of the pro-drilling Florida Petroleum Council. </p>

Interestingly, as important as vitamins are, the body lacks the ability to manufacture most on its own. Instead, it must rely on outside sources to meet its nutritional needs.</p>
<p>Vitamins are organic compounds and as such they&#8217;re found naturally in many of the foods we consume. They&#8217;re also available in the form of vitamin supplements. Thirteen different vitamins are needed to perform such crucial functions as helping protect against infections and disease, helping the body&#8217;s metabolism, helping the body grow and helping the body remove waste.  (to read more <a title="Vitamins and our Body" href="http://www.articlesbase.com/supplements-and-vitamins-articles/vitamins-and-our-body-500065.html" target="_blank">click here</a>)</p>
<h2>Dr. Dave&#8217;s Vitamin Basics:</h2>
<p>Most scientists and nutritionists recommend taking vitamin supplements. The foods we eat simply don’t supply enough.</p>

<p><strong>Vitamin A</strong></p>
<p>is necessary to build healthy cells, especially those that line the mouth, stomach, intestines, and respiratory tract.  Since those cells are the barrier to invasion by bacteria and viruses, Vitamin A helps protect us from infections by preventing their entry into mouth, nose, lungs, and gastro-intestinal tract.</p>
<p>These individual vitamins in the <strong>B vitamin </strong>family are thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, folic acid, and cobalamin.  These are essential vitamins. Essential means that the body does not make that vitamin, or does not make enough of it, and it must be supplied by the diet or a deficiency state can result.</p>
<p>Let’s talk a bit about <strong>thiamin </strong>as an example of a vitamin that is found in food but has often been refined out by processing, leading to the need for supplementation. Thiamin helps the body produce energy from carbohydrates.  It makes sense that it’s found in high carbohydrate foods like whole grains. When a grain is refined, most of the thiamin is lost. For example, when whole wheat is refined, the outer part of the grain is removed and the remaining part is used to make white flour. Many nutrients are lost during the refining process.  The same thing happens when processing brown rice to make white rice.  Enriching the grains replaces some of the lost nutrients, although they may not have the same amount as before refining.  That’s why we recommend whole grains instead of refined grains.</p>

<p><strong>Vitamin C</strong> provides antioxidants that protect your body from free radicals, which may cause heart disease and cancer It is responsible for producing collagen which is present in your muscles and bones. Collagen is responsible for holding the cells together. Vitamin C also boosts the immune system.</p>
<p><strong>Vitamin D</strong> is critical for healthy bones.  It aids in the process of bone mineralization and helps absorb calcium.  Vitamin D functions more like a hormone than a vitamin, but it is considered essential because some people don’t produce enough.  Vitamin D is produced in the skin cells when exposed to sunlight.  In areas where the sun doesn’t shine for extended periods of time, or for those who are home bound or bedridden, this can be a problem.  That’s when taking a dietary supplement or drinking fortified milk is important. Food sources of Vitamin D are egg yolks, fatty fish, butter, milk fortified with Vitamin D.</p>
<p><strong>Vitamin E </strong>is a fat-soluble antioxidant.  It helps reduce free radical damage in the fat layer of the cell.  Vitamin E is found in oils, nuts, wheat germ, whole grains, and nut butters like almond butter.  For people who don’t eat much fat, dietary supplements are a good source of Vitamin E.  Make sure you choose a mixed natural tocopherol.  It should contain alpha, gamma and delta tocopherol.</p>
<p><strong>Minerals</strong> are important too. They regulate fluid balance, help muscle function and nerve function and keep bones healthy.</p>
<p>You probably already know how important <strong>calcium</strong> is for strong bones and teeth.  Making sure you get the right amount of calcium will help slow the rate of bone loss as you get older.  Most of bone building occurs by the mid-thirties, but it never stops.  Your bones are continually being “remodeled,” that is broken down and built up again.  The need to get the right amount of calcium never stops.  Calcium is also important for muscle and nerve function.  Your need varies depending on your age and whether you are male or female.</p>
<h2>Vitamins: You Need to Know What Supplements You Are Taking</h2>

<p>The supplement industry is fragmented and difficult to navigate. As a general rule of thumb, it is good to remember that quality and purity are costly for the manufacturer, so the cheaper your supplements, the likelier it is that they are of poor quality and poor purity and you are not getting the full benefits from them. The most expensive vitamins, in my opinion, are the ones that don’t get utilized by the body, so even if you bought them for cheap, you’re actually being taken for a ride.</p>
<p>Knowing what you are getting is not always easy. You may have to brush up on your research skills to wind up getting the best buys and bargains in supplements. What is happening now in the nutriceutical industry is that there is some standardization. GMP is a set of principles and procedures that helpsensure the products will have the required quality. Look at your supplements and see if they are GMP certified. If they are Triple GMP certified that means they have passed the quality and purity tests of three different certifying sources. I use those. Every single step of every single part of the manufacturing process is screened for potency, purity and quality. I’ll pay extra for that. <p>Are you experiencing the wintertime blues?  Have you let yourself go over the past few months?  With spring just around the corner, before you know it, you will be shedding your winter clothes.  With fewer clothes, you also will be revealing where those extra winter calories have wound up! </p>
<h2>Setting up Your first Date </h2>
<p>Starting a workout routine can be difficult for anyone.  Getting the ball rolling can be difficult, especially if you are a procrastinator.  You know you have to start sometime, and you may have already committed to the activity, but starting off that first workout  is tough.  From my experience, once you get past that first day, you are much more likely to stay on track. I suggest that you do something different.  Instead of planning your first day, plan your goal “<em>date</em>”. </p>
<h2>What should your first Date look like? </h2>

<p>For me, I decided before I ran my first mile back in February, to complete the <a title="My Date" href="http://www.njmarathon.org/Half_Marathon_Info.html" target="_blank">New Jersey Half Marathon </a>on May 2<sup>nd</sup>.  That was quite a lofty goal, since I had not been running regularly up to that point.  What I did know was that if I trained to complete the 13.1 miles on May 2<sup>nd</sup>, I would be in much better shape on that<em> Date</em>, than I was when I started back February.  It also forced me to get off my butt, through the cold weather to stay on track with my running.  Your <em>Date</em> may be a 5K race, or even a 1 mile walk.  What ever it is, mark your calendar and commit to that <em>Date</em>. </p>
<h2>Group Dating </h2>
<p>Recruit some of your friends to join you.  It is much more fun to set goals with others.  I challenged a few friends to join me.  It’s exciting to have a group of people all working towards the same goal.  It will keep you accountable and they will appreciate the positive motivation.  You will also be creating a bond with like minded people.  This past week-end I ran with the <a title="New Running Friends" href="http://www.eteamz.com/cliftonroadrunnersclub/" target="_blank">Clifton Road Runners Club </a>and made friends with like minded people.  Some that had already committed to my May 2<sup>nd  </sup><em>date</em>!  </p>
<h2>Don’t Do it alone </h2>

<p>Even though, many of your workouts, eating, and planning will be done by yourself, you don’t have to be alone. <p>Pain is always a warning signal when you are working out.  If you ignore such symptoms it can often result in even more serious problems.</p>
</div>
<p>How often have you heard the expression, “No pain, no gain”? It can apply to many life situations, including exercise to shape up, tone or drop weight. But when you pain is severe or prolonged, you gain nothing and stand to lose a lot!</p>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">Here are 7 tips to help you stay safe and avoid workout injuries:</h2>

<h3>1. Warming up before your workout</h3>
<p> – Warm muscles are far less likely to tear than cold ones. So, if you’re going out for a run, walk a bit first, then trot before you go into full running mode. Stretching your muscles, especially the ones you’re going to be using, also helps you to avoid injury.</p>
<h3>2. Cooling down after your workout</h3>
<p>– The same is true when you end an exercise session. You can’t just automatically stop when you are finished with your workout because this may cause an unsafe drop in blood pressure. Using running as an example- slow down to a walk again before you just stop your exercise. It’s also important to stretch out those muscles again.</p>
<h3>3.  Staying hydrated </h3>

<p>– Water, water, water! Drinking water before, during and after your workouts replaces fluids lost from sweating and exertion, especially important in warm or hot weather.</p>
<h3>4.  Taking it easy at the beginning of your workout program</h3>
<p> – You can’t expect to run a marathon your first day out. Start slowly and build in terms of time spent and exertion level for your workouts. For example, if you’re engaging in weight training, you don’t want to start with 20 pound weights; you might start off with 2 pound weights and gradually increase weight levels.</p>
<h3>5.  Listening to your body</h3>
<p> – Don’t continue your workout if suddenly you find yourself in pain. Your body is trying to tell you something. Ignoring it can only make it worse, so stop whatever you’re doing and give your body a few days to recover before starting up again.</p>
<h3>6.  Making sure you’re wearing the right shoes for the exercise</h3>
<p>– This is really important to reduce the impact of the exercise on your body, particularly your ankles, shins, calves, knees and other joints.</p>
<h3>7.  Learning the proper technique for each workout</h3>
<p>– Make sure you know the proper technique for any new workout routine you are attempting for the first time. Correct technique is as important as warming up to avoid injury.</p></blockquote>

<h2>Example Routine:</h2>
<p>You can do each exercise whenever you want.  For example, I do my 50 squats in the morning before I get dressed for the day.  (Takes less than 2 min).  At some point in the day I will do my 50 pushups (takes me about a minute).  You can do sets of 10, 5 times, and build up to 50 at once.  I have a pull-up bar at my office, so usually I will do 10 pull-ups on my own; spot myself with the chair for another 10.  Usually takes me a couple times at various parts of the day.  Lastly, I’ll get my 50 sit ups in just before bed.  Once you get in a routine, and your body feels stronger and tighter, you are not going to want to miss a day!</p>
