Living Longer Depends Largely on Your Habits

Excerpt from my upcoming book “The 5 Secrets To Living Longer”

Habits can make or break you. They increase your chances of living a long, health-filled and fulfilling life or decreasing those chances. So much of it depends on you.

Family history—genetics—is important. But it is not as important as the habits you cultivate day in and day out, choice after choice, day after that. It is your habits that determines how good you feel, how good you look, how well you age, and how long you live.

Why are they Living Longer in Okinawa ?

For instance, the number one killer disease of Americans is heart disease—cardiovascular problems. This is a PREVENTABLE disease. People in Okinawa don’t get heart diseases at anywhere near the rates Americans do. Tens of millions of Americans have some form of heart disease, and it is Public Enemy Number One as far as cause of death goes. However, when people from Okinawa move here or adopt our eating and health habits, more of them develop heart disease. We can see clearly that dying of heart disease is not a matter of genes. It is a matter of the health choices a person makes over the long term, day by day, his or her HABITS.

Some Habits will kill you! Cigarette smoking, for instance, is a major factor in prevention of the two top killers of Americans: heart (cardiovascular) disease and cancer (the majority of cancer deaths in this country are due to lung cancer). Just changing this one habit (admittedly, it’s hard to change once you get going on it) could save millions and millions of lives every single year. It could save yours.

Keep this in Mind…

(taken from Sean Covey’s book on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens):

I am your constant companion

I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden.

I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.

I am completely at your command.

Half of the things you do you might as well just turn over to me

And I will do them—quickly and correctly.

I am easily managed. You must be firm with me.

Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons,

I will do it automatically.

I am the servant of all great people and, alas, of all failures as well.

Those who are great, I have made great.

Those who are failures, I have made failures.

I am not a machine, although I work with the precision of a machine

Plus the intelligence of a person.

You may run me for profit or run me for ruin—

It makes no difference to me.

Take me, train me, be firm with me and

I will place the world at your feet.

Be easy with me and I will destroy you.

Can you guess what powerful entity or being is writing this verse? Is it a bird? A plane? Superman? Who is this fabulous power? The last two lines of the verse tell you:

Who am I?

I am Habit.
