We love to say that by being so connected that “we’re getting more done than ever before” but are we really more connected or simply more distracted?
Are we being more productive, or just busier?
I think the answer is clear…
Seminars and Conferences
How many of you , have paid to attend a conference or seminar, but spent the majority of the time checking your e-mail, text,, Facebook, or posted twitter messages, while not paying any attention to the person speaking?
Getting Work Done
Ever been on a deadline for an important project for “work”, while listening to music on the computer and responding to trivial cell phone calls, IM messages, and Facebook notifications, instead of focusing on the project at hand?
Socializing
Have you ever interrupted your “free time” with friends or family members, (the people you claim are the most important people in your life), to answer a non-urgent cell phone instead of allowing the call to go voice mail. How about those parents on their phone texting and checking e-mail on a Sunday, while “Little Johnny” tries to show them that he could go down the slide like a big boy?
Driving
Don’t even get me started about people who talk on the cell phone, or heaven forbid, text on a cell phone while driving. Distracted driving is a crime and danger to society–and if you were just a threat to yourself, I wouldn’t mind so much. But, you’re a threat to me! You have the latest technology to communicate to anyone in the world, but you don’t have a free hand to use our turning signal! (When did turning signals become optional?)
Of course, this is just my opinion…
I think if we don’t disconnect once in a while we are going to be disconnected to what matters most. I get it. Being connected to the world 24/7 is a possibility, but it doesn’t have to be a necessity. Creating smart phone free time and interacting with our immediate surroundings is crucial.. I propose that we all try to disconnect from our constant contact to the entire planet regularly, in order to re-connect with the real world around us. Giving our Nervous System a break from the overload is not only healthy, but natural. We were not designed to be stimulated mentally 24/7 without a break. It creates Subluxation and breakdown to our health.
