Are you experiencing the wintertime blues?  Have you let yourself go over the past few months?  With spring just around the corner, before you know it, you will be shedding your winter clothes.  With fewer clothes, you also will be revealing where those extra winter calories have wound up! 

Setting up Your first Date 

Starting a workout routine can be difficult for anyone.  Getting the ball rolling can be difficult, especially if you are a procrastinator.  You know you have to start sometime, and you may have already committed to the activity, but starting off that first workout  is tough.  From my experience, once you get past that first day, you are much more likely to stay on track. I suggest that you do something different.  Instead of planning your first day, plan your goal “date”. 

What should your first Date look like?

For me, I decided before I ran my first mile back in February, to complete the New Jersey Half Marathon on May 2nd.  That was quite a lofty goal, since I had not been running regularly up to that point.  What I did know was that if I trained to complete the 13.1 miles on May 2nd, I would be in much better shape on that Date, than I was when I started back February.  It also forced me to get off my butt, through the cold weather to stay on track with my running.  Your Date may be a 5K race, or even a 1 mile walk.  What ever it is, mark your calendar and commit to that Date

Group Dating 

Recruit some of your friends to join you.  It is much more fun to set goals with others.  I challenged a few friends to join me.  It’s exciting to have a group of people all working towards the same goal.  It will keep you accountable and they will appreciate the positive motivation.  You will also be creating a bond with like minded people.  This past week-end I ran with the Clifton Road Runners Club and made friends with like minded people.  Some that had already committed to my May 2nd  date!  

Don’t Do it alone

Even though, many of your workouts, eating, and planning will be done by yourself, you don’t have to be alone.
